Chapter 13

The evening sun cast long, golden shadows across the polished hardwood floor of the Morgan estate parlor. The room had been thoroughly cleaned, the physical evidence of the violent confrontation entirely removed, yet the space retained the quiet gravity of a turning point in history. Evelyn Morgan stood near the large bay window, watching the gentle rustle of the oak trees in the front yard as the cool autumn breeze swept across the lawn.
She wore a simple, elegant navy dress, her dark hair falling softly around her shoulders. The small scar near her temple was now faint, almost invisible beneath her dark locks, serving as a subtle reminder of a battle fought and won. The house was quiet, save for the soft ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner—a sound that felt steady, reassuring, and completely unhurried.

"The final federal asset forfeiture filings were signed off by the Department of Justice this afternoon," Captain Vance said quietly, breaking the peaceful silence of the room. "The case file is officially closed, Director Morgan."
Evelyn turned away from the window, offering him a warm, genuine smile. "Thank you, Captain. For everything. Your professionalism and steady resolve kept this investigation on track when the obstacles seemed insurmountable."
"It was my duty," Vance replied, stepping forward to shake her hand firmly. "Though I have to say, in all my years of service, I’ve never encountered an auditor who took a baseball bat to the head, crawled across a room, and calmly initiated a federal takedown call in the exact same breath."
Evelyn chuckled softly, the sound light and natural. "Necessity has a remarkable way of focusing your priorities, Captain. When you realize the people you trusted are willing to destroy everything—including lives—to protect their greed, hesitation is no longer an option."
"The company is in good hands now," Vance noted, looking around the restored parlor. "The new compliance framework you've put in place is already becoming the gold standard for defense logistics contractors nationwide."
