Chapter 12

The federal district courtroom was once again filled to capacity, though the atmosphere this time was markedly different from the tense uncertainty of the arraignment. The public galleries were silent as the final sentencing hearing commenced. Judge Sterling presided with his customary gravity, reviewing the comprehensive presentence investigation reports submitted by both the federal prosecution and the defense.
Clara and Leo Morgan stood before the bench, both wearing standard orange correctional facility jumpsuits. The months in maximum-security holding had visibly aged them both. Clara’s posture was permanently slumped, her eyes dull and defeated, while Leo stared straight ahead with a hollow expression, finally carrying the crushing weight of the choices he had made out of blind loyalty and greed.
"Under the terms of the negotiated plea agreement accepted by this court," Judge Sterling began, his voice deep and measured, echoing clearly through the quiet courtroom, "Clara Morgan and Leo Morgan have formally pleaded guilty to all counts of conspiracy, wartime fraud, racketeering, and obstruction of federal justice."
The judge paused, adjusting his glasses to look directly down at the two defendants.
"The crimes you committed were not merely financial offenses against a corporation," Judge Sterling continued, his tone hardening with moral authority. "You systematically compromised the integrity of national defense supply chains, risking the lives of brave men and women serving our country overseas in operational zones. You chose personal enrichment over human safety, and when your crimes were discovered, you resorted to intimidation and physical violence to silence the truth."
Clara closed her eyes, a single tear finally tracing down her weathered cheek—not out of genuine remorse, but from the bitter realization of her total and absolute ruin. Leo swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly inside his metal restraints.
"In accordance with the federal sentencing guidelines and the terms of the plea agreement," Judge Sterling pronounced with absolute finality, "Clara Morgan, you are hereby sentenced to forty years in a federal correctional facility without the possibility of parole. Leo Morgan, you are sentenced to thirty-five years in federal custody. May God have mercy on your souls. Court is adjourned."

The heavy gavel struck the wood with a definitive, resounding crack. The marshals stepped forward promptly, gently guiding Clara and Leo away through the secure side exit. They did not look back at the gallery, nor did they offer any final words of protest. The system had functioned exactly as intended: justice had been served, accountability had been enforced, and the corrupt enterprise they had built had been completely dismantled.
Evelyn Morgan sat quietly in the front row of the gallery, watching them leave. She felt no sense of petty triumph or vindication, only a profound, settling peace. The storm had finally passed, leaving behind a clear path forward built on truth, duty, and enduring honor.
