Chapter 9: The Web Crumbles

The morning of the board meeting was cold and crisp. Heavy gray clouds hung low over the city skyline as black luxury sedans pulled up to the glass tower that served as the headquarters for Sterling Enterprises.
Inside the executive boardroom on the fortieth floor, Julian sat at the head of a long mahogany conference table, flanked by Victoria and Richard. Board members in expensive suits chatted quietly, reviewing the financial reports placed before them. Julian looked immaculate on the outside, but a subtle tremor in his fingers gave away his intense anxiety.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Richard Sterling announced, standing up and clearing his throat. “Before we begin the official vote on the restructuring of the Sterling Trust, I want to address the tragic rumors that have circulated regarding my son’s engagement event. A former family member has been attempting to slander our name...”
The grand double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding thud.
Every head turned. Clara walked into the room, dressed in a sharp black suit, carrying a leather briefcase. Beside her walked Sarah Vance and Marcus, carrying a portable digital projector and a sealed evidence envelope.
“Clara!” Victoria snapped, rising from her chair with sharp indignation. “This is a private corporate meeting! Security, remove these people immediately!”

“Security won't touch us, Victoria,” Clara said, her voice clear, commanding, and echoic in the large room. “Because standing outside that door right now are two officers from the Financial Crimes Division.”
The room went dead silent. Julian’s face instantly drained of all color.
