Chapter 5: Innocent Testimony

The small living room of Clara’s modest apartment was bathed in warm, soft sunlight streaming through the sheer curtains. Away from the cold opulence of the Sterling manor, the space felt alive and safe. Lily sat at the low wooden coffee table, carefully drawing with colored pencils.
Clara sat down on the floor beside her, placing a gentle hand on her daughter’s back. “Lily, can you tell me again about what happened right before Uncle Julian shouted?”
Lily paused, her green pencil resting on the paper. She looked down at her drawing—a picture of a big house with dark clouds above it. “I was looking for my silver shoe clip,” she said softly. “It had fallen off near the big curtain in the hallway.”
“Did you see Uncle Julian near the jewelry table?” Clara asked carefully.
Lily nodded slowly. “He wasn't alone, Mommy. He was talking to a man in a gray coat—the man who delivers the wine bottles. Uncle Julian looked very angry, but he was whispering. He gave the man a velvet box—the dark blue one with the gold ribbon.”
Clara felt a chill run down her spine. The heirloom ring was stored in a dark blue velvet box with a gold ribbon.
“Are you sure it was the blue box, Lily?”

“Yes,” Lily replied with total clarity. “Uncle Julian told the man, ‘Take this to Mr. Vance immediately and tell him the interest is paid for this month.’ Then the man left through the kitchen door. When Uncle Julian turned around and saw me standing by the curtain, his face turned red and he started yelling that I stole his ring.”
The puzzle pieces began falling into place with terrifying precision. Julian hadn’t lost the family heirloom. He had used it as collateral to pay off a personal debt—and when he caught a child watching him, he created a violent distraction to cover his tracks and destroy her credibility before she could speak.
