Chapter 3: Shadows of the Dynasty

The Sterling estate was an imposing stone manor built on the crest of a private hill, surrounded by high iron gates and manicured hedge gardens. To the outside world, it was the sanctuary of old wealth and philanthropic prestige. To Clara, as she stepped through the heavy double doors the following morning, it felt like entering a cold, gilded cage.

Victoria Sterling was waiting in the morning room, sitting behind a dark mahogany desk with a cup of porcelain tea in front of her. Richard stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the foggy grounds.

“You didn’t return my calls last night, Clara,” Victoria said without looking up, her voice icy and controlled. “That was extremely impolite.”

“My daughter was bleeding in an emergency room, Victoria,” Clara replied calmly, walking into the center of the room. “I had priorities.”

“The child suffered a tiny scratch from an unfortunate accident,” Victoria scoffed softly, placing her teacup on its saucer with a delicate clink. “What was truly damaged last night was our family’s standing. Julian’s engagement party was turned into a vulgar spectacle. And your dramatic exit only fueled the gossip rags.”

“Julian attacked a child,” Clara said, her voice dropping an octave. “He smashed furniture right in front of her and accused her of theft without a shred of evidence. Where is he?”

“Julian is managing the fallout,” Richard interjected, turning around from the window. His voice was heavy, accustomed to command. “The sapphire ring remains missing. Julian saw the girl near the display case right before it disappeared. We are prepared to overlook her actions due to her age, provided you sign a formal agreement to drop any ridiculous claims regarding last night’s incident.”

He slid a single sheet of paper across the desk. It was a non-disclosure agreement, paired with a subtle clause waiving any liability for the injury Lily suffered.

Clara looked down at the document, then looked up at Richard and Victoria. A sad, quiet smile touched her lips. “You really think money and legal threats can cover up everything, don’t you? You built an empire on appearances. But Julian is hiding something far worse than a missing ring, and I will find out what it is.” She turned on her heel and walked out, leaving the document untouched on the desk.
