Chapter 7: An Unlikely Ally

To make the video evidence undeniable in a court of law, Clara needed someone who could cryptographically verify its authenticity and testify about the hotel's server tampering. The young technician’s USB drive was a start, but it needed expert forensic validation.

Arthur directed Clara to a small, cluttered electronics repair shop on the outskirts of the city. Behind the counter sat Marcus, a man in his late forties with sharp, intelligent eyes and graying hair. Marcus had once been the head of security for the Sterling Corporation—until he was framed and fired four years ago when he raised questions about unaccounted budget discrepancies.

“Clara Sterling,” Marcus said, looking up from a circuit board he was soldering. A small, dry smile touched his lips. “I never expected to see a Sterling in my shop.”

“I’m not here as a Sterling, Marcus,” Clara said, setting the USB drive on the counter. “I’m here as a mother whose child was attacked and framed by Julian.”

Marcus stopped working and looked at the drive, then up at Clara’s eyes. He saw the sheer determination in her expression—the same honest fire he had possessed before he was crushed by the family’s wealth.

“What’s on this?” Marcus asked, pulling off his magnification goggles.

“Raw analog footage from the hotel ballroom corridor on the night of Julian’s engagement,” Clara answered. “Julian claimed my daughter stole the sapphire ring. This footage shows him handing the box to a courier.”

Marcus plugged the drive into a high-powered workstation sitting on his workbench. For the next two hours, the shop was silent except for the clicking of a mouse and the hum of cooling fans. Marcus ran advanced digital authentication software, analyzing timestamp signatures and frame continuity.

“It’s clean,” Marcus finally declared, turning the monitor toward Clara. The screen clearly showed Julian in his tuxedo, handing a small blue velvet box to a man in a gray coat at 7:42 PM—ten minutes before he smashed the podium in front of Lily.

“This video is untouched,” Marcus said, his voice firm. “And better yet, I can trace the metadata deletion logs back to the IP address of Julian’s personal laptop. I’ll testify for you, Clara. It’s time they finally answer for what they’ve done.”
