Chapter 11: The Fall of the Empire

The glass doors of the boardroom opened once more, but this time it was not security guards—it was two uniformed police detectives accompanied by representatives from the District Attorney’s office.

“Julian Sterling?” the lead detective asked, stepping forward with a warrant in hand. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and child endangerment. You have the right to remain silent.”

Julian backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking frantically around the room like a trapped animal. “Mother! Do something! Call our lawyers!” he yelled, reaching out toward Victoria.

Victoria Sterling sat frozen in her leather chair. For the first time in her life, the immaculate, cold matriarch looked utterly broken. Her silver hair seemed suddenly fragile, her eyes hollow. She looked at her son, then looked across the table at Clara. The immense wealth and influence she had spent decades cultivating could not stop the inevitable march of justice.

“There is nothing I can do, Julian,” Victoria said, her voice barely a whisper. She closed her eyes as the detectives stepped forward, pulled Julian’s arms behind his back, and snapped the silver handcuffs around his wrists.

As Julian was led out of the boardroom in shame, passing dozens of employees who watched in utter silence, Richard collapsed back into his chair, covering his face with his hands.

Clara stood tall in the center of the room, taking a deep, clean breath. The crushing weight that had sat on her chest since that terrifying night at the ballroom was finally gone. She didn't feel triumph or malice; she felt only a profound, quiet peace.
