Chapter 8: The Gathering Storm

As the day of the Sterling Corporation’s annual board meeting approached, tension mounted across the city. The Sterlings were attempting to push through a corporate restructuring that would grant Julian full, unmonitored control over the family's charitable foundation and private equity assets.
Victoria Sterling worked behind the scenes to marginalize Clara, launching a subtle press campaign hinting that Clara was an unstable mother struggling with mental health issues, attempting to cast doubt on anything she might say.
Clara sat in her lawyer’s office, reviewing the final strategy. Sitting beside her was Sarah Vance—a sharp, uncompromising family law attorney who specialized in protecting children from institutional abuse.
“They are going to try to silence you before you even step foot into that board meeting, Clara,” Sarah warned, looking over the stack of affidavits Marcus and Arthur had provided. “Victoria has hired three different crisis management firms. They will claim the video is a deepfake created to extort the family.”
“Let them try,” Clara said calmly. “We have the original analog tape, the forensic audit of the foundation, the courier’s identity confirmed by police records, and Marcus’s expert testimony. We aren't just defending Lily’s innocence anymore. We are exposing a systematic criminal fraud.”
Suddenly, Clara’s phone chimed with a message from an unknown number. It contained a single photograph: a picture of Lily’s school building taken from across the street, accompanied by a text message: “Keep quiet, or things will get much worse for your daughter.”

Clara felt a momentary spike of cold horror, but it was quickly replaced by a white-hot, razor-sharp focus. They were desperate. Julian was losing his grip, and desperate men made critical mistakes.
“Sarah,” Clara said, holding up her phone. “Add intimidation and stalking charges to the legal filing. We are moving up the timeline. We strike tomorrow.”
