Chapter 2: The Rain

There was no time to pack. Grace grabbed her coat, her phone, and the envelope, slipping out the back door into the relentless midnight rain. She knew Nathan’s resources. As the CEO of Apex Pharmaceuticals, he owned the local police, the judges, and the politicians.

Running through the slick, shadowed alleys of the suburbs, Grace’s mind raced. The names on the list weren't random. They were the subjects of an illegal, off-the-books clinical trial Apex had conducted. Nathan was testing a highly unstable neurological drug on marginalized communities who couldn't afford to fight back. Sarah, an auditor at Apex, had found the discrepancy. Grace flagged down a passing taxi, throwing herself into the backseat. ""Downtown,"" she gasped. ""Just drive.""
