Chapter 7: The Interrogation

The interrogation room at the downtown precinct was bathed in the harsh, sterile glow of a single overhead fluorescent fixture. Elena Vance sat at the stainless steel table, her posture rigid, her demeanor a masterclass in haughty defiance. Her tailored black suit was still immaculate, but the lack of makeup made her look sharp-edged and predatory. Her defense attorney sat quietly beside her, whispering periodic reminders not to answer specific lines of questioning.
Detective Marcus Vance slid a thick stack of printed server logs across the metal table, followed by a certified copy of the international wire transfers.
"Recognize these, Mrs. Vance?" Marcus asked calmly, leaning against the back of his chair with his arms crossed.
Elena glanced down at the papers, her lip curling in disdain. "These are clumsy forgeries manufactured by a disgruntled former auditor who tried to ruin my reputation after a personal altercation at a charity event. My legal team will have them thrown out of court within twenty-four hours."
"Forgeries," Marcus repeated, a slight smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. "Interesting choice of words. Especially since the cryptographic keys used to sign these transactions trace directly back to a private hardware token registered under your personal social security number."
Elena’s eyes flickered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of genuine panic that she ruthlessly forced down. "Anyone could have accessed my home office. My husband, for instance, has always been reckless with household security."
The heavy metal door of the observation room clicked open, and Julian Vance stepped into the interrogation suite. He did not look at Elena's lawyer; instead, he stopped three feet from the table and looked directly into his wife's cold eyes.
"I gave the police the master decryption keys, Elena," Julian said evenly, his voice steady and devoid of hesitation. "I gave them the server records, the property deeds, and the audio files of you boasting about how easily you manipulated the board of directors. It's over."
Elena stared at her husband, the mask of controlled innocence finally shattering completely. Her face twisted into an expression of raw, vitriolic fury. "You pathetic coward," she hissed, slamming her hands against the steel table so hard that the coffee cups rattled. "I built this empire! I did the dirty work while you played golf and pretended to be a respectable businessman! You think cutting ties with me will save your reputation? They'll dig up your name on every shell company before the week is out!"
Marcus leaned forward, tapping his pen against the table to punctuate the end of the outburst. "Thank you for that spontaneous confession, Mrs. Vance. The audio recording equipment in this room is state-of-the-art. Your outburst has been duly noted for the official record."
