Chapter 6: The Digital Trap

The hospital room had been converted into a makeshift command center. A secure encrypted laptop, provided by Detective Marcus Vance, sat open on the rolling over-bed table. Julian stood beside Claire, his fingers hovering over the keyboard as he walked her through the complex hierarchy of corporate entities that Elena had established over the past four years.
"Here," Julian murmured, pointing at a nested sub-folder labeled Acquisitions_Global. "This is where she stored the secondary ledgers. To access it, you need a dual-authentication key—a password split between her personal phone and a hardware token she keeps in our home safe."
Claire pulled up the forensic data from the smartphone she had clutched on the stairs. "When Elena's lawyers tried to wipe her phone remotely from the courthouse this morning, our cyber unit intercepted the signal and mirrored the device's partition. I have her half of the authentication key right here."
Julian looked at her with a mixture of surprise and profound respect. "You anticipated that she would try to wipe the phone while in police custody."
"People like Elena always rely on the same playbook," Claire said, her fingers flying across the keyboard to input the mirrored credentials. "They panic, they try to erase the evidence, and in doing so, they leave a digital breadcrumb straight to their backup servers. Now, let's see what else she tried to hide."
The screen flickered, replacing the scrolling lines of code with a clean graphical user interface displaying international wire transfers, property deeds, and internal email correspondence. Claire scanned the headers quickly, her breath catching as she opened a thread dated three weeks prior to the charity gala.
"Look at this email," Claire whispered, turning the laptop slightly so Julian could see.
The sender was Elena, and the recipient was a prominent real-time liquidation broker. The message detailed the immediate sale of three high-end residential properties purchased with embezzled charity funds, with instructions to wire the proceeds into an un-tradable cryptocurrency wallet.
"She was preparing to flee the country," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The charity gala was supposed to be her final public appearance before liquidating everything and disappearing to a non-extradition country. When you confronted her on the staircase with the audit... you caught her right before she pulled the trigger on the whole escape plan."
"And that's why she tried to kill me," Claire said softly, placing a protective hand over her still abdomen. "She wasn't just hiding a financial crime; she was protecting her exit strategy."

Marcus Vance walked back into the room just then, shaking his head with grim satisfaction. "Just got off the phone with the District Attorney. With these server logs and Julian's corroborating testimony, the judge just signed an expanded arrest warrant. We're seizing her passports and freezing every single asset tied to her name."
