Chapter 5: The Unlikely Ally

The heavy oak door of Claire’s hospital room creaked open, revealing a visitor who was neither a doctor nor a police officer. It was Julian Vance, Elena’s estranged husband and the minority shareholder of Vance Enterprises. Julian looked exhausted, his designer suit wrinkled as though he had slept in it, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. He stood awkwardly in the doorway, holding a simple paper cup of black coffee.

"May I come in, Ms. Miller?" Julian asked quietly, his voice devoid of the arrogant polish that usually defined the Vance family name.

Claire stared at him warily, her hand instinctively moving toward the nurse call button clipped to her pillow. "Mr. Vance. I am surprised you managed to get past the police detail outside."

"Detective Vance and I had a brief, highly unpleasant conversation in the hallway," Julian replied, offering a weak, self-deprecating smile as he stepped inside and closed the door softly. "He searched my briefcase, verified my identity, and finally let me pass. He's very thorough. Much more thorough than my wife gives him credit for."

"If you're here to deliver a settlement offer or intimidate me on behalf of your wife's legal team, you can turn right around," Claire said, her tone sharp and unyielding despite her fragile physical state.

"I am not here on Elena's behalf," Julian said, pulling up a chair and sitting down at a respectful distance. He set the coffee cup on the bedside table untouched. "In fact, I haven't spoken to Elena since the police escorted her out of our home two hours ago. I'm here because I need to save what remains of my family's legacy—and quite frankly, to save myself."

Claire narrowed her eyes, studying his micro-expressions. "You're her husband. You sign the corporate disclosures. You must have known about the foundation transfers."

"I knew there were discrepancies in our overseas investments, yes," Julian admitted, running a hand through his dark hair. "I suspected Elena was funneling money into private accounts to maintain her lifestyle independent of our shared holdings. But I had no idea she was draining the charity funds, let alone that she pushed a pregnant woman down a flight of stairs to cover her tracks. That crossed a line I cannot and will not defend."

"That's a very convenient confession now that the police have her physical ledgers," Claire noted skeptically.

"It's not a confession, Ms. Miller; it's a partnership proposal," Julian said, leaning forward. "Elena has hidden assets across three international jurisdictions that the police audit hasn't found yet. If you help me untangle the corporate network, I can give you the cryptographic keys to her primary offshore server. Together, we can ensure she faces actual justice instead of a slap on the wrist from a high-priced defense attorney."
