Chapter 1: The Descent

The chandelier at the Grandview Hotel cast a cold, brilliant illumination over the polished marble staircase. Claire Miller stood frozen in her light blue satin dress, the heavy weight of her thirty-week pregnancy pressing against her lower back. Her dark hair was pinned up in a neat, elegant twist, defying the sudden chaos that had just upended the charity gala. Just inches away, Elena Vance stood draped in a dramatic maroon one-shoulder gown with a sweeping cape, her expression twisted in an aggressive snarl. The echo of Elena's hissed accusation—"You ruined my life!"—still vibrated in the heavy air between them.

Before Claire could steady her breathing or find the words to defend herself, Elena’s hand shot out with sudden, calculated force. The push was sharp and unyielding. Claire’s heel caught on the edge of the polished teak step. Her arms flailed desperately, trying to find purchase against the empty air, but gravity proved unforgiving. She tumbled backward, her body striking the hard wooden steps with sickening thumps before she finally came to a rest near the lower landing.

A sharp, searing agony flared across Claire’s abdomen and radiated through her chest. The breath left her lungs in a ragged gasp. She curled inward instinctively, one hand clutching her aching ribs while the other brushed against her mouth. When she pulled her fingers away, a thin, metallic trickle of blood stained her skin. A few feet away, a young waitress in a crisp white shirt and black vest stood paralyzed, her hands pressed over her mouth in absolute shock.

Elena did not hesitate. She swept down the grand staircase with theatrical urgency, her maroon cape billowing behind her. Stopping above Claire, Elena pointed a manicured finger past the camera toward the terrified onlookers gathered at the edge of the ballroom. Her voice cut through the murmurs of the crowd with practiced victimhood. "She attacked me! Make her apologize to me!"

Claire lay pinned to the cold floor, the world spinning at the edges of her vision. Yet, through the haze of pain, her survival instinct took over. Her fingers brushed against the hard leather of her fallen silver clutch bag and wrapped around the smooth glass of her smartphone. The screen was smeared with blood, but it still functioned. Ignoring the metallic taste in her mouth and the terror threatening to overwhelm her, Claire brought the phone to her ear. Tears spilled hot and fast down her cheeks, but her voice remained chillingly resolute as she spoke into the device. "Detective, send everyone here immediately!"
