Chapter 3: The Hospital Room

The sterile beep of the fetal monitor filled the private room at St. Jude’s Medical Center with a rhythmic, reassuring pulse. Claire lay propped up against a stack of pillows, an IV line taped to the back of her hand and a white bandage pressed against the corner of her lip. Her doctor had confirmed that while she and the baby had suffered severe trauma from the fall, the pregnancy was currently stable, though strict bed rest was mandatory. The physical pain was sharp, but the mental clarity was sharper.

The door clicked open, and Detective Marcus Vance stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder. He pulled a chair close to the bed and sat down, his expression grim.

"The preliminary forensic report from the stairs just came in," Marcus said softly, resting his forearms on his knees. "Hotel security footage was mysteriously wiped for the exact twenty minutes surrounding the incident. However, one of the catering waitresses—a young woman named Maya—came forward to my precinct voluntarily. She saw the whole thing, Claire. She saw Elena shove you with both hands."

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, closing her eyes for a moment as relief washed over her. "Maya was standing right by the dessert table. I was hoping someone would notice. Elena thinks her family name and her husband's political connections make her untouchable."

"They certainly tried," Marcus replied, flipping open the folder. "Within an hour of the incident, three different city council members called my captain demanding my department drop any inquiry into Elena Vance, citing a baseless harassment claim filed by her lawyers. But they didn't count on the digital footprint you secured before the ambulance arrived."

Marcus pulled out several printed transaction logs. "The silver clutch you handed me contained a secondary backup drive. It links Elena's personal shell company directly to the embezzlement scheme draining the children's hospital fund. She wasn't just stealing from charity; she was funding a massive underground real estate acquisition project."

Claire opened her eyes, looking directly into Marcus's tired gaze. "She knew I was auditing the final accounts tonight. She cornered me on the staircase to demand I hand over my flash drive. When I refused, she tried to silence me permanently."

"Well, she failed," Marcus said with quiet determination. "An arrest warrant for aggravated assault and financial fraud is being signed by a judge right now. But Claire, you need to understand something. Elena has powerful friends. Once she realizes we have the physical ledger, she and her allies are going to retaliate. You need to stay hidden right here, under police guard."
