Chapter 2: The Arrival

The flashing blue and red lights of the police cruisers painted the marble facade of the Grandview Hotel in erratic, urgent strokes. Inside the lobby, the glittering patrons of the charity gala had been pushed back behind velvet ropes, their murmurs rising like a swarm of angry hornets. Detective Marcus Vance pushed through the glass doors, his trench coat damp from the autumn drizzle outside. He was a man in his late forties with tired eyes and a reputation for seeing through corporate charm. When his radio crackled with an urgent dispatch from Claire Miller, his stomach had dropped. He knew Claire; she was a forensic accountant who had spent the last six months helping his unit dismantle a massive embezzlement ring operating within the city's elite philanthropic circles.

On the grand staircase, paramedics were kneeling beside Claire, carefully sliding a stabilization board beneath her trembling frame. Elena Vance stood nearby, flanked by her high-priced defense attorney and two hotel security guards, projecting an aura of aggrieved innocence. Elena’s maroon gown was immaculate, a stark contrast to Claire’s blood-stained satin dress. As Marcus approached the stairs, Elena immediately stepped forward, dabbing a dry eye with a lace handkerchief.

"Detective Vance, thank goodness you're here," Elena said, her voice dripping with fabricated distress. "That woman lost her mind. She came at me, screaming accusations, and simply lost her footing when she tried to lunge. It's a tragedy, truly, but she brought this entirely upon herself."

Marcus ignored her completely, his gaze locked onto Claire as the paramedics lifted her onto a gurney. Claire’s face was pale, her dark hair coming loose from its updo, but her eyes locked onto Marcus with intense, burning clarity. She raised a trembling hand, gripping a small silver flash drive she had managed to retrieve from her clutch.

"Don't let them touch my bag, Marcus," Claire whispered, her voice cracking as another wave of pain racked her body. "The financial records... they're all in the cloud, but the physical ledger is inside the clutch. Elena didn't push me because of a personal grudge. She pushed me because I found the transfer receipts. She's been laundering funds from the foundation straight into offshore accounts used by the city council."

Marcus nodded slowly, signaling two uniformed officers to secure the silver clutch and the bloodied smartphone. He turned to face Elena, whose practiced smile had begun to falter at the edges. The game was far from over, and the real investigation was only just beginning.
