Chapter 10: The Subpoena

The offices of Thorne Digital Marketing occupied the top floor of a sleek glass-and-steel tower in downtown Seattle. Inside, the open-plan workspace hummed with the nervous clatter of keyboards as young employees scrambled to delete files and shut down secondary browser tabs. The sudden arrival of Detective Marcus Vance, accompanied by two uniformed cyber-crime officers bearing a signed judicial search warrant, brought the entire floor to a screeching halt.
Victoria Thorne, a sharp-featured woman in her late thirties wearing a designer cream blazer, stepped out of her corner office with an expression of icy outrage. "What is the meaning of this? You cannot simply barge into a private facility without providing advance legal notice."
Marcus held the warrant out, letting her read the official judicial seal. "We aren't giving advance notice, Ms. Thorne, because your agency is actively obstructing a federal financial and assault investigation by operating a coordinated disinformation campaign on behalf of an incarcerated felon."
"That is a baseless accusation," Victoria snapped, though her eyes darted nervously toward the rows of server racks humming against the far wall. "My firm works with dozens of high-profile corporate clients. Whatever public relations disputes Mrs. Vance is currently navigating have nothing to do with us."
"Really?" Marcus asked, stepping past her and walking straight toward the central server rack. He gestured to the cyber-crime officers, who immediately connected hardware extraction units to the primary mainframes. "Because our digital forensics unit traced the financial transactions funding your latest bot network directly to an untraceable subsidiary account controlled by Elena Vance."
One of the cyber officers looked up from his portable terminal, holding up a data drive. "Got it, Detective. We've mirrored the local partition and intercepted the outbound communication logs. There's an active messaging thread between Victoria Thorne and Elena's defense team detailing instructions on how to intimidate witnesses."
Victoria’s carefully maintained composure finally cracked. She stepped forward, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "Elena told me she was being framed! She said if I didn't help her control the public narrative, everything we built together would be destroyed!"
"Loyalty is expensive, Ms. Thorne, but obstruction of justice carries a very specific prison sentence," Marcus said quietly, signaling an officer to read her her rights. "You're welcome to explain your loyalty to a federal judge."

As Victoria was escorted out of her office in handcuffs, the entire floor watched in stunned silence. The last pillar of Elena’s external influence had just crumbled. Without her loyalists spreading disinformation, the truth of what happened on the grand staircase—and the massive scale of the embezzlement—was finally free to stand entirely on its own unassailable merits.
