Chapter 9: Community Roots

Word of Jax’s stand against his former gang spread quickly through the small town. In a tight-knit community like Oakhaven, people noticed when a man chose a clean path over easy vice. Clara was the first to act, organizing a small drive among the diner patrons to collect clothes, books, and toys for Leo. Local business owners began sending their fleet vehicles to Jax’s garage, specifically asking for him to do the maintenance.
One Saturday morning, Clara arrived at the trailer carrying a large wooden box filled with old carpentry tools. ""My late husband was a carpenter,"" she explained, handing the box to Jax. ""He always said that fixing things with your hands heals the soul. You and Leo could use this to build something together.""
That afternoon, Jax and Leo set up a workbench in the small shed behind the trailer. Jax taught Leo how to measure timber, how to hold a hammer, and how to sand down rough edges until the wood felt soft as silk. Together, they began building a wooden bookcase for Leo's room. As they worked, Leo laughed freely for the first time since arriving in town—a bright, clear sound that erased the years of grief and isolation Jax had carried inside his heart.
