Chapter 12: The Day in Court
The county courthouse was cold and formal, its tall marble pillars imposing against the grey morning sky. Jax sat at the defense table, wearing a clean dark suit he had borrowed from a coworker. His long hair was neatly tied back, his beard trimmed, and his hands rested quietly on the table. Beside him sat a court-appointed family lawyer, and behind them sat Clara, the garage owner, and several neighbors who had come to offer support.
Judge Rebecca Sterling presided over the courtroom. She reviewed the thick stack of documents in front of her, pausing as she read through Jax’s past criminal record. ""Mr. Mercer,"" Judge Sterling began, her tone measured and solemn. ""Your history raises significant concerns regarding stability and suitability as a guardian. The state’s primary mandate is the safety and well-being of the child.""
Ms. Vance stepped forward to present her social evaluation report. The room held its breath as she took the stand. Jax prepared himself for the worst, his stomach churning with anxiety. But as Ms. Vance opened her folder, she looked directly at the judge and spoke clearly: ""Your Honor, thirty days ago I would have recommended foster placement. However, my final inspection revealed an extraordinary transformation. Mr. Mercer has secured stable employment, maintained a safe home, and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his son. More importantly, the child is thriving, secure, and deeply attached to his father.""
