Chapter 5: Shadows from the Past

Morning brought a pale, crisp sunlight that filtered through the cracked blinds. Jax spent the early hours cooking a basic breakfast of eggs and toast—something he hadn't done for another person in almost a decade. Leo ate hungrily but quietly, his eyes constantly tracking Jax’s movements. Just as Jax was settling into the unfamiliar rhythm of fatherhood, a heavy knock rattled the thin wooden door of the trailer.
Jax’s body tensed instantly. He motioned for Leo to stay in the kitchen and walked to the door, pulling it open just enough to see outside. Standing on the porch was Marcus, a man from Jax's past—a ghost from the old motorcycle club that had led Jax down the path to prison. Marcus wore a worn leather cut with familiar patches, a smirking smile playing on his weather-beaten face.

""Look who's playing house,"" Marcus sneered softly, leaning against the doorframe. ""Word on the street is you got a kid in there, Jax. The club heard you were back in town, but we didn't expect you to start a family. Marcus, the president, wants to know if you're back in the business or if you've gone soft.""
""I'm out, Marcus,"" Jax said, his voice dropping an octave, cold and unyielding. ""I served my time. I paid my debt to the club and to the state. I don't want any trouble, and I don't want you near my place."" Marcus's eyes drifted past Jax, catching a glimpse of Leo standing near the kitchen table. Marcus grinned, but his eyes remained cold. ""Trouble has a way of finding guys like us, Jax. Keep your nose clean, but remember where you came from.""
