Echoes of the Highway

With only three days remaining before the final custody hearing, a severe autumn storm swept through the valley. Torrential rain pounded the town, causing flash floods and knocking out power across the county. Jax stood in the dark kitchen of the trailer, watching the rising waters in the ditch beside the driveway. The wind howled through the trees, snapping branches and tearing at the trailer’s aluminum roof.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the shed. Jax grabbed a flashlight and rushed outside into the pouring rain. A heavy oak branch had fallen through the roof of the shed, hitting the main electrical junction box connected to the trailer and sparking a small localized fire. Jax acted fast, using the fire extinguisher from the kitchen to douse the flames before they could spread, but the damage was done: the shed was wrecked, and the trailer's electrical wiring was damaged.

Standing soaked in the freezing rain, Jax felt a sudden wave of despair. Ms. Vance was scheduled to perform her final inspection in forty-eight hours. If the living conditions were deemed unsafe or damaged, Leo would be taken away immediately. Jax fell to his knees in the mud, staring at the ruin. Then, a small hand rested on his back.
