Chapter 13: A Voice from the Heart

Before Judge Sterling could issue her final ruling, young Leo stood up from his seat in the gallery. The court bailiff started to step forward, but Judge Sterling raised a hand, motioning for quiet. ""Young man, do you have something you wish to say?"" she asked gently.
Leo walked slowly to the front of the courtroom, holding a small piece of paper in his hands. It was the same folded paper he had carried into the diner weeks ago. ""My mom told me that my dad made mistakes,"" Leo said, his voice clear and resonant in the quiet courtroom. ""She said he went away because he was broken. But when I found him, he didn't run away again. He stayed. He built me a bed, he helped me with my homework, and he protected me when things got hard.""
Leo turned to look at Jax, his eyes bright with affection. ""My dad isn't broken anymore. And I don't want to live anywhere else in the world."" Judge Sterling looked down from her bench, her strict expression softening. She lowered her glasses, took a deep breath, and picked up her gavel. ""In the matter of Leo Mercer,"" the judge pronounced, ""this court finds that remaining in the custody of his biological father, Jax Mercer, is in the best interest of the child. Full legal guardianship is hereby granted to the father."" The sharp bang of the gavel echoed through the room like a thunderclap of freedom.
