Chapter 8

Julian’s hand dropped instinctively to his side, his eyes snapping toward the dusty window overlooking the front clearing. The low rumble of an idling diesel engine vibrated through the floorboards of the cabin, instantly shattering the fragile safety of their retreat.
"Get down," Julian whispered sharply, his voice dropping an octave as he moved with sudden, calculated speed.
Clara didn't hesitate. She dropped to her knees beside the sofa, scooping Lily into her arms and pulling the little girl flat against the floorboards behind the heavy wooden desk. Lily clutched her spiral notebook tightly, her wide eyes reflecting her mother’s silent panic, though she miraculously refrained from crying out.
Julian pulled a small, sleek satellite burner phone from his jacket pocket, his thumb rapidly dialing a pre-programmed emergency override code. Through the grime-streaked window, two heavy-duty black SUVs bearing tinted glass rolled silently into the clearing, their headlights extinguished to maintain tactical surprise.
Car doors opened and slammed shut with synchronized precision. Heavy boots crunched against the gravel and pine needles outside.
"Julian Vause, we know you're inside," a cold, amplified voice called out from a megaphone near the porch. It was Marcus Vance—smooth, polite, and terrifyingly lethal. "There is nowhere to run on this island, Julian. Hand over the ledger and the girl, and your father guarantees a quiet, comfortable retirement in the Caymans."
Julian stood near the darkened corner of the room, his dark suit blending seamlessly with the shadows. He didn't raise his voice; instead, he spoke into the burner phone, relaying GPS coordinates to an encrypted private security detail he had hired in Seattle just hours before they crossed the Sound.
"Extraction point confirmed. Seal the island ferry terminals," Julian spoke in a low, controlled tone into the device before sliding it back into his pocket.
Heavy footsteps mounted the wooden porch steps. The rusted padlock on the front door clattered to the floor as a heavy iron crowbar jammed into the doorframe, splintering the aged cedar wood with a loud, cracking echo.
"Julian!" Clara hissed from behind the desk, her voice trembling. "They're coming in!"
Julian moved with decisive grace. He grabbed a heavy iron poker from the stone hearth, positioning himself directly beside the splintering entryway just as the front door burst inward, crashing against the interior wall.
A heavy-set operative dressed in tactical black gear stepped through the threshold, his tactical flashlight cutting a bright beam through the dusty air. Before the man could raise his weapon, Julian swung the iron poker with calculated, brutal efficiency, striking the operative's wrist and sending his sidearm clattering across the floorboards.
A second operative rushed behind him, but Julian ducked low, sweeping his leg to take the man's knees out from under him. The man crashed heavily onto the wooden floor with a muffled grunt.
"Move!" Julian shouted over his shoulder, grabbing Clara by the arm and yanking her upward while scooping Lily into his other arm in one fluid motion.

They bolted toward the rear exit of the cabin as more heavy boots swarmed the front porch.
