Chapter 7

The flickering blue light from the rugged laptop cast long, dancing shadows across the rustic walls of the Orcas Island cabin. Lily was sitting cross-legged on the old rug near the stone hearth, quietly coloring in her notebook while the soft, raspy audio of Luka Vause’s voice filled the quiet room.
“Julian, if you’re watching this, it means Clara and Lily made it to the cabin, and it means our father’s hounds are still sniffing at our heels,” the screen-version of Luka spoke, his dark hair slightly unkempt, wearing a worn denim jacket instead of a tailored suit. He looked directly into the camera lens with intense, familiar eyes.
Clara stood behind Julian’s chair, her hands gripping the wooden backrest so tightly her knuckles turned white. Hearing Luka’s voice after thirteen years of silence hit her with physical force, bringing a sharp ache to her chest.
“I didn’t run away out of cowardice,” Luka continued on screen, leaning forward into the frame. “I ran because I uncovered the true foundation of Vause Industries. Dad didn't build this empire on smart investments or aggressive takeovers. He built it on systemic extortion, shell corporations, and the systematic elimination of anyone who threatened to expose the board's illicit offshore accounts. The night I pulled my sailboat into the storm, Marcus Vance and his enforcers tried to force me to sign over my voting shares. I faked the shipwreck to buy my family time.”
Julian watched intently, his face a mask of restrained emotion. Every corporate instinct he possessed was screaming that this was a liability, yet every drop of blood in his veins recognized the absolute truth in his brother's words.
“The flash drive you’re holding contains the encrypted banking ledgers linking every member of the board—including our father—to illegal federal wire fraud and money laundering,” Luka said on the recording. “It’s enough to put them away for the rest of their lives. But it’s also a target on our backs. If Marcus gets his hands on this drive, he won't just ruin us; he’ll wipe our entire lineage off the map. Julian, you have to protect Clara and Lily. They are the only pure things left in this godforsaken family.”
The video file ended with a hiss of static, leaving the cabin in profound, suffocating silence.
Julian exhaled slowly, his chest rising and falling in a deep, measured breath. He reached out and ejected the flash drive, slipping the small piece of plastic into the inner pocket of his dark suit jacket.
"Well," Julian said quietly, turning his head to look up at Clara. "Now we know why my father’s lawyers are hunting us. It’s not just about a family trust or an unverified bloodline. It’s about a multi-billion-dollar criminal enterprise that’s about to collapse."
Clara blinked back the stinging tears in her eyes, releasing her grip on the chair. "And Luka? Did he say where he was going after he recorded this?"
"The metadata on the video file was routed through a secure proxy server in Zurich," Julian replied, standing up from the desk. "He’s in Europe. Switzerland, most likely. Which means Marcus Vance is going to mobilize every private asset at his disposal to intercept us before we can cross international borders."

As if on cue, the faint, distant crackle of a snapped twig echoed outside the cabin, followed by the low, rumbling idle of a heavy engine approaching down the overgrown logging trail.
