Chapter 14

The air in the secure tenth-floor conference room smelled of acrid gunpowder smoke and burned ozone. Clara pulled Lily down flat behind the heavy mahogany conference table, shielding the little girl's body with her own, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.
Julian stood upright near the edge of the table, his posture rigid, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. His dark suit was stained with soot from the flashbang, but his expression was a mask of cold, lethal fury.
"Marcus," Julian said, his voice cutting through the ringing in the room like a razor blade. "You're too late. The grand jury already has the files."
Marcus Vance chuckled, stepping further into the room while his armed operatives kept their weapons trained squarely on Julian and the federal prosecutor. Marcus looked older than his years, his silver hair neatly combed, his eyes dead and calculating.
"Files can be expunged, Julian. Servers can suffer catastrophic power surges," Marcus replied smoothly, walking over to the conference table and looking down at the rugged laptop resting near Sarah Miller. "And federal prosecutors can suffer... unfortunate accidents before those indictments ever hit a judge's desk."
Sarah Miller glared at him from across the table, her hands flat on the wood. "You're walking into a federal trap, Marcus. The entire building is locked down."
"This building belongs to the Vause board, Prosecutor," Marcus countered, his smile vanishing as his face hardened into a mask of corporate ruthlessness. He reached out, his hand hovering over the rugged laptop. "Hand over the flash drive, Julian. Don't throw your life away for a brother who abandoned you and a girl who doesn't even belong in this world."
Julian didn't move an inch. A heavy, pregnant pause filled the room, the tension stretching tighter than a piano wire.
"She is a Vause," Julian said slowly, his voice dropping an octave as his eyes locked onto Marcus with intense, unwavering drama.
Before Marcus could signal his operatives to open fire, the heavy exterior security doors at the end of the hallway burst open with a resounding crash. A fresh wave of shouting echoed through the corridor, followed by the sharp, undeniable crack of federal tactical rifles returning fire.
