Chapter 2

The sterile quiet of an upscale downtown café offered little refuge from the psychological storm brewing between Julian and Clara. They sat across from each other in a secluded corner booth, the ambient chatter of espresso machines and distant jazz fading into white noise. Lily sat between them, happily coloring in her notebook with a neon yellow crayon, completely oblivious to the tectonic shift occurring in the adult world.

Julian rested his elbows on the dark wood table, his sharp eyes examining Clara as if searching for a hidden confession. His dark suit jacket remained buttoned, projecting a barrier of corporate armor.

"Thirteen years, Clara," Julian began, his voice low and measured, avoiding any theatrical outbursts in favor of cold, calculated interrogation. "Luka walked out of our family estate in the dead of night, leaving behind nothing but scorched earth and a federal investigation. You expect me to believe he left behind a secret family before he vanished into thin air?"

Clara lowered her coffee cup, her fingers tracing the ceramic rim. She wore a beige top beneath her unbuttoned trench coat, her posture defensive yet resilient. "He didn't plan to leave, Julian. At least, not the way you think. Luka was running from the very people who built your corporate empire. He gave me this tattoo on a rainy night in Portland, weeks before he went off the grid. He said it was a promise that no matter what happened, a part of him would always remain tethered to the world."

Julian listened, his breathing restrained as he analyzed every micro-expression on her face. He knew his family’s history—the ruthless boardrooms, the dirty money, the violent corporate takeovers orchestrated by their father. Luka had always been the black sheep, the artist and rebel who wanted out. Julian had stayed behind, burying his conscience beneath tailored suits and stock portfolios.

"If Luka is still alive," Julian said slowly, his gaze piercing, "why hasn't he contacted anyone? Why let people think he drowned in the Puget Sound?"

"Because he knew if he came back for us, your father’s enforcers would finish the job," Clara replied, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. She leaned forward, closing the physical distance between them. "Luka didn't just disappear. He was hunted. And when I found out I was pregnant, I went into hiding under a name you won't find in any database."

Julian reached up, rubbing the bridge of his nose as a profound headache threatened to take root. The implications were staggering. If Lily was Luka’s child, she was the legal heir to a significant portion of the Vause trust—a trust their aging, tyrannical father had tried to lock away entirely. More importantly, she was a living target.

"Mommy, can we get hot chocolate?" Lily interrupted, looking up with wide, innocent eyes that mirrored the exact shade of brown possessed by both Julian and Luka.

Julian looked at the little girl, his hard exterior softening just a fraction. The restrained emotion in his chest tightened into a fierce protective instinct. Whether he wanted it or not, his brother’s ghost had just walked back into his life, wearing a yellow dress and holding a crayon.
