Chapter 11

The small coastal motel in Anacortes was nondescript, featuring faded beige siding, flickering neon neon signs, and a desolate parking lot hidden from the main highway. It wasn't luxurious, but after escaping the island ambush, it provided the vital anonymity they desperately needed.

Inside Room 14, the curtains were drawn tight against the evening drizzle. A small table lamp cast a warm, amber glow across the worn carpet. Lily had finally fallen fast asleep on one of the twin beds, her yellow dress slightly wrinkled, still clutching her notebook against her chest.

Julian sat at the small laminate desk, the rugged laptop plugged into a portable satellite hotspot. The screen flickered with streams of raw hexadecimal code as the decryption algorithm finally cracked the secondary partition of the flash drive Luka had left behind.

Clara sat on the edge of the adjacent bed, watching him closely. She had cleaned up, washing the forest mud from her face and hands, though the dark circles under her eyes betrayed the sheer exhaustion of the past forty-eight hours.

"Did it work?" she asked quietly, her voice barely a whisper so as not to wake Lily.

"It worked," Julian said, his voice completely devoid of inflection, though his eyes scanned the scrolling financial records with growing disbelief. "My father didn't just embezzle from Vause Industries. He ran a massive international slush fund through shell companies in the Caymans, Panama, and Zurich. Every major political campaign, every federal judge appointment, every corporate hostile takeover in the Pacific Northwest for the past twenty years was bought and paid for with this money."

He tapped a specific folder on the screen, opening a scanned document bearing an official federal seal.

"And here is the insurance policy Luka was keeping," Julian continued, turning the screen slightly toward Clara so she could read the text. "A sworn deposition from Marcus Vance’s former chief accountant, detailing every wire transfer, signed under penalty of perjury, waiting to be sent directly to the Department of Justice."

Clara leaned forward, reading the digital pages in stunned silence. "If the DOJ gets this, Vause Industries won't just face fines. The entire executive board will go to federal prison for decades."

"Including my father," Julian added softly. He leaned back in the creaky chair, running a hand through his styled dark hair, which was now slightly disordered. "Which explains why Marcus Vance is hunting us with such desperate urgency. This flash drive is a guillotine blade hovering directly over their necks."

"So how do we deliver it?" Clara asked, her eyes meeting his with fierce determination. "If we walk into a local federal field office, Marcus’s inside informants will know our location before we even reach the front desk."

Julian pulled out his encrypted satellite burner phone. "We don't go to a local office. We bypass the regional chain of command entirely. I have a contact at the Department of Justice’s elite anti-corruption division in Washington, D.C.—a prosecutor who has been trying to pierce the Vause corporate veil for five years without enough hard evidence."

He dialed a secure ten-digit number, pressing the speakerphone button so Clara could hear every word. The line rang three times before a crisp, authoritative voice answered on the other end.

“This is Special Prosecutor Sarah Miller. State your clearance code.”

Julian cleared his throat, leaning close to the microphone. "Miller, this is Julian Vause. I have the ledger, the banking records, and the accountant's sworn deposition linking Vause Industries to global racketeering and federal wire fraud."

A sharp intake of breath echoed through the phone speaker, followed by a tense, heavy pause.

“Julian? Where are you? The corporate world thinks you and your brother are dead or missing.”

"I'm standing in the crosshairs, Miller," Julian replied evenly, his eyes locking onto Clara across the dim motel room. "And I'm ready to burn it all down. But I need extraction, and I need federal protection—for myself, for the woman I'm with, and for Luka's daughter."
