Chapter 3

The evening traffic crawl along Interstate 5 offered Julian ample time to reflect on the chaos unfolding in his otherwise orderly life. Clara’s Honda Civic trailed closely behind his sleek black sedan, a rolling symbol of the gulf that had separated their worlds for over a decade. He had instructed her to follow him to his private penthouse in Belltown—a secure, heavily guarded fortress where they could speak without the prying eyes of corporate spies or media sharks.

Parked in the underground garage, Julian stepped out of his car and waited for Clara to unbuckle Lily from the backseat. The garage was dim, illuminated by harsh fluorescent tubes that cast long, stark shadows across the concrete floor.

"Keep close," Julian instructed quietly as he punched the private elevator code into the stainless-steel keypad.

Once inside the penthouse, the sprawling city skyline opened up before them through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The space was minimalist, dominated by cool grays, obsidian accents, and expensive leather furniture. Lily immediately dropped her notebook onto a glass coffee table and wandered toward the window, fascinated by the twinkling lights of the Needle in the distance.

Clara kept her trench coat on, standing near the entryway as if prepared to bolt at a moment's notice. "You didn't bring us here to interrogate us further, did you?"

Julian walked over to a wet bar, pouring two fingers of single-malt scotch into a heavy crystal glass. He didn't offer her a drink. Instead, he leaned against the counter, swirling the amber liquid slowly.

"I brought you here because the moment you stepped into my life today, a clock started ticking," Julian said, his voice devoid of panic, carrying only the grim weight of reality. "My father’s security detail is ruthless. If they catch wind that Luka had a child—an heir who bypasses the custody restrictions of the trust—they won't hesitate to erase you to protect the corporate charter."

Clara crossed her arms, her knuckles white against her beige sleeves. "I've survived thirteen years hiding in plain sight, Julian. I don't need your corporate paranoia."

"You survived because my father thought Luka died a penniless fugitive," Julian countered sharply, taking a slow sip of his drink. He walked over to a concealed wall safe behind a modern art installation, input a complex biometric sequence, and withdrew a heavy leather-bound ledger. He placed it squarely on the dining table with a dull thud. "This is the family ledger. Every asset, every shell company, every dirty settlement tied to the Vause name. And right here, on page four hundred, is a standing directive written by my father: any unverified bloodline claiming Vause assets is to be terminated with extreme prejudice."

The silence in the penthouse grew heavy, punctuated only by the faint hum of the HVAC system. Clara stared at the ledger, the color draining from her face. The abstract danger she had lived with for years suddenly materialized into cold, hard ink.

"So what do we do?" Clara asked, her voice dropping to a whisper.

Julian looked at Lily, who was now humming softly while drawing a crude picture of a wolf in her notebook. A slow, determined resolution settled into his sharp dark eyes.

"We find Luka before they find us," Julian said.
