Chapter 4

Dawn broke over the Puget Sound, casting a pale, washed-out light across the Seattle waterfront. Inside the penthouse, the morning air smelled of freshly brewed black coffee. Julian sat at the glass dining table, his laptop open to a secure, encrypted interface. Code lines scrolled rapidly across the screen as his corporate cybersecurity algorithms searched through archived maritime records from thirteen years ago.

Clara stood by the window, holding a mug of coffee with both hands. She had removed her trench coat, revealing the simple beige top underneath. Her dark wavy hair fell neatly over her shoulders. Lily was curled up on the oversized sectional sofa, fast asleep beneath a cashmere throw, her notebook clutched protectively against her stomach.

"The maritime logs from the night Luka supposedly vanished don't add up," Julian stated without looking up from his screen. His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with practiced precision. "The coast guard report stated his sailboat capsized off the San Juan Islands during a squall. But look at this metadata timestamp."

Clara walked over, placing her mug on the table before leaning down to examine the glowing display. "What am I looking at?"

"The distress beacon wasn't triggered manually from the boat," Julian explained, pointing a finger at a highlighted line of hexadecimal code. "It was activated via a remote satellite relay registered to a subsidiary shell company controlled by our father’s chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance. My brother didn't suffer an accidental shipwreck, Clara. He was ambushed."

A cold dread settled over Clara as she processed the revelation. For years, she had carried the crushing guilt of believing Luka had abandoned her and their unborn child out of fear or recklessness. To learn now that he had been hunted by his own flesh and blood fundamentally altered the foundation of her grief.

"Marcus Vance is still running our father’s legal division," Clara murmured, her voice laced with sudden fear. "If he realizes we are looking into this..."

"Marcus already knows something is moving," Julian interrupted calmly, closing the laptop with a sharp snap. "My corporate assistant informed me this morning that Marcus requested an unscheduled audit of the primary trust accounts—specifically looking for dormant secondary portfolios. He’s hunting for ghosts."

Julian stood up, adjusting the cuffs of his dark suit shirt. His posture was rigid, embodying the ruthless executive persona he used daily to crush boardroom rivals. But beneath the cold exterior, the raw nerve of familial betrayal throbbed relentlessly.

"We can't stay here," Julian said, checking his watch. "The penthouse is secure against casual surveillance, but Marcus has state-of-the-art telemetry. If he pings my private IP address searching for maritime archives, he'll have our coordinates within the hour."

Clara hurried over to the sofa, gently shaking Lily awake. The little girl blinked sleepily, rubbing her eyes and clutching her yellow dress. "Mommy? Are we going somewhere?"

"Yes, sweetie, we're going on a little road trip," Clara said softly, masking her panic with a reassuring smile. She grabbed her beige trench coat and slipped it on, her eyes meeting Julian's across the room. "Where are we going, Julian?"

"To the one place Marcus Vance won't look," Julian replied, grabbing his car keys from the counter. "An abandoned cabin on Orcas Island where Luka and I used to hide from our father when we were boys."
