Chapter 9: Healing Old Wounds**

Two weeks later, Clara was discharged from the hospital. Instead of returning to the noisy city, Victor drove them two hours north to a peaceful lakeside cottage in upstate New York—a property he had purchased under his personal name years before his mother gained access to his corporate accounts.
The cottage featured floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking tranquil, pine-fringed waters. Sunlight flooded the spacious living room, where a crackling wood fire warmed the polished oak floors.
Annie sprinted across the front lawn, laughing as she chased a golden retriever puppy Victor had adopted for her. Her laughter echoed across the serene valley, pure and unburdened by fear.
Clara stood on the wraparound porch, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea, watching their daughter play. Victor stepped up beside her, placing a soft knit blanket over her shoulders.
"How are you feeling today?" he asked softly.
"For the first time in four years, I woke up without checking the lock on the front door," Clara admitted, leaning her head gently against his arm. "It feels surreal, Victor. Like a dream I’m terrified to wake up from."
"You don't have to be afraid anymore," Victor said, turning toward her. "Everything I built, everything I have, belongs to you and Annie. I resigned as CEO of Williams Holdings this morning."
Clara looked at him in surprise. "You stepped down? But that was your father’s dream."

"My father’s dream was for his family to be honorable and happy," Victor answered. "I’m restructuring the conglomerate into an independent public trust. Arthur will manage operations, and all family profits will fund affordable housing and maternal care across the state. My only job now is being a good father, and earning back your trust."
