Chapter 12: An Unspoken Bond**

That evening, after the opening festivities had wound down, the lake house was quiet. Annie was fast asleep in her upstairs bedroom, clutching a soft plush bear under a hand-stitched quilt.
Victor sat on the porch stairs, staring up at the canopy of stars reflecting across the tranquil lake. Clara walked out, holding two mugs of hot cider, and sat down on the step beside him.
"You really gave it all away, didn't you?" she asked softly, handing him a mug.
"The money was a curse as long as it was tied to their cruelty," Victor replied, taking a sip. "Seeing Annie safe and hearing you laugh again is worth more than every skyscraper in Manhattan."
Clara looked out over the dark water, silent for a long moment. "When I was in that hospital bed, I didn't think I could ever forgive you. I blamed you for staying away for so long."
"You had every right to hate me, Clara."
"I don't hate you, Victor," she said, turning to face him in the moonlight. "I see how hard you’ve fought to make things right. You dismantled your entire world just to save ours."
Victor reached out, his hand hesitating for a fraction of a second before gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "I loved you from the first day I met you in that little coffee shop by the campus, Clara. That love never stopped, not even when I thought you had left me."

Clara leaned into his touch, her eyes glistening with soft emotion. "Then don't let go this time."
