Chapter 6: A Haven in the Pines**

By midnight, the storm had deepened, washing out the mountain roads leading into the dense pine forests of northern Michigan. Marcus navigated the sedan up a secluded gravel path hidden beneath heavy pine boughs, arriving at a weathered cedar cabin overlooking a misty ravine.
This was Marcus’s off-grid contingency sanctuary—stocked with emergency medical supplies, untraceable cash, forged documents, and a perimeter security grid.
He carried a half-asleep Lily inside, wrapped in Sal’s oversized wool coat. The cabin smelled of cedar, aged paper, and dry firewood. He gently laid her on the soft leather sofa, pulling a warm wool blanket up to her chin.
"Teddy's hungry," Lily mumbled sleepily, pointing a tiny finger at the stuffed bear beside her pillow.
Marcus couldn't help a faint, rare smile from breaking through his weathered face. "I think Teddy can wait until breakfast. Sleep now, little one."

Once she drifted off, Marcus went to the bathroom mirror. He stripped off his ruined shirt, cleaned his cut cheek with antiseptic, and wrapped his bruised ribs tightly with medical gauze. Looking at his reflection—the scars, the tattoos, the hardened gaze—he realized how dark his world had been until that yellow dress walked into his life. He wasn't just surviving anymore; he finally had something worth fighting for.
