Chapter 13: A New Identity**

Three months later, the coastal town of Mendocino, California, woke to the sound of gentle Pacific waves crashing against golden cliffs. The salt air was clean and crisp, devoid of city smog and gunsmoke.

In a small white cottage nestled on a hill overlooking the ocean, Marcus sat on the wooden deck sanding down a handcrafted cedar toy chest. His hair was cut short, his posture relaxed, and his dark suit had been replaced by a simple denim shirt and work boots. The federal raid on Pier 42 had dominated national headlines for weeks, officially listing "Marcus Vance" as presumed dead in the harbor wreckage—a fiction Marcus’s forged records made permanent.

He was now Thomas Cole, a quiet woodworker who kept to himself.

The screen door clicked open, and Lily ran out onto the deck wearing bright red rain boots and holding a freshly picked yellow daisy.

"Look, Thomas! The garden is waking up!" she beamed, holding the flower up to his nose.

Marcus smiled, placing his sandpaper down and gently taking the daisy from her hand. "It’s beautiful, Lily. Just like you."

Sarah, who had relocated to the coast as Lily’s legal guardian and family friend, stepped out carrying two cups of warm tea. She looked at Marcus with quiet admiration. "She asked if you could teach her how to fish this afternoon."

Marcus looked out over the vast, calm ocean. "I think that can be arranged."
