Chapter 2: The Little Guardian**

The girl’s name was Lily. She didn't belong to the criminal underworld; she was the forgotten daughter of a woman Marcus once failed to protect—a debt he never realized fate would collect in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Chicago.

Lily stepped closer, her small fingers wandering down from his cheek to the thick hemp ropes wrapping Marcus's chest and binding his arms behind the wooden chair. She tugged at the knots with all her might, her little brows furrowing in deep determination. The effort was futile against industrial twine, but the gesture shattered Marcus inside.

"I won't leave you," Lily murmured, clutching her teddy bear against his knee.

"Listen to me, Lily," Marcus said, his voice lowering to a protective growl. "The men who put me here are coming back. Bad men. You need to hide behind those wooden crates over there. Don't make a sound, no matter what happens."

Lily looked up, her lower lip trembling slightly, but she shook her head. "Momma said angels watch over people who are lonely. You look lonely, mister."

Marcus swallowed hard around the lump forming in his throat. He had spent his entire adult life believing he was damned beyond redemption. He was a weapon wielded by powerful mobsters to extinguish lives, extort businesses, and instill terror. Yet here was a tiny, fragile soul viewing him not as a monster, but as someone worthy of compassion.

Footsteps echoed outside on the gravel drive. Heavy boots. Two men, laughing coarsely as they approached the rusted double doors.

"Lily, hide! Now!" Marcus urged through clenched teeth.
