Chapter 1: The Touch of Innocence**

The damp chill of the abandoned grain warehouse bit through Marcus’s tailored charcoal suit, but it was the coarse hemp rope cutting into his ribs that truly anchored him to reality. His neck tattoo—a snarling wolf entwined with thorns—throbbed where dried blood had caked beneath his jawline. He had spent fifteen years living as the ghost enforcer for the Moretti syndicate, an apex predator in a jungle of concrete and greed. Now, betrayed by his own underboss, he was waiting for the executioner’s bullet.
Then the wooden floorboards creaked.
Marcus didn't expect an assassin to weigh barely thirty pounds. Emerging from behind the rusted industrial grain silos was a little girl no older than four. Her blonde hair fell in a loose, messy ponytail, and her dusty yellow dress was smudged with soot. Clutched tightly under her left arm was a battered plush teddy bear.
She didn’t scream. She didn’t run. She walked straight toward him with wide, luminous hazel eyes uncorrupted by malice.
Marcus held his breath, his instinct warning him this was a trap. "Kid... get out of here," he rasped, his voice raw from dehydration. "It’s not safe."
She paused inches from his knees. Slowly, she lifted a tiny, warm palm and pressed it against his bruised, dirt-streaked cheek. The contrast between her fragility and his hardened brutality stunned him into total silence.
"Are you hurting?" she asked softly.
Marcus stared into her eyes. He saw no fear—only pure, unadulterated concern. "I’m fine, kiddo."
She tilted her head, her fingers tracing the edge of his jaw. "Are you scared?"
A single, quiet breath escaped Marcus's chest. For the first time in over a decade, the ice around his hollow soul began to splinter. He leaned his head fractionally into her gentle palm.

"Not anymore," Marcus whispered.
