Chapter 12: The Cost of Peace**

Sirens wailed in the distant city streets as police cruisers and federal agents converged on Pier 42, alerted by Marcus’s anonymous distress transmission.

Marcus slipped away into the industrial fog, but every step was agony. A stray bullet from the dock firefight had grazed his side, opening a deep wound through his ribs. Blood seeped through his black jacket, staining his fingers as he pressed hard against the injury.

He walked miles through the rain-slicked back alleys, refusing to collapse until he reached the suburban neighborhood where Lily waited. The adrenaline that had fueled him for days began to drain, replaced by bone-deep exhaustion.

As he reached Sarah’s front porch, the morning sun was just beginning to break through the clouds, casting golden rays across the dewy green lawn.

He raised his heavy hand and knocked three times on the wooden door.

The door flew open. Sarah stood there, gasping at the sight of his bloodied state, but before she could speak, a small figure in a dusty yellow dress darted past her legs.

"Marcus!" Lily cried out, throwing her tiny arms around his legs.

Marcus sank to his knees on the welcome mat, heedless of the pain in his side. He wrapped his arms around the little girl, burying his face in her hair as tears finally cut clean paths through the soot and blood on his cheeks.

"I kept my promise," he whispered.
