Chapter 3: The Cipher of the Fallen

Dawn broke over the misty estate with a cold, grey hue. Julian spent the night by Leo’s bedside, watching over his nephew with a loaded sidearm concealed beneath his jacket. Trust had become a luxury he could no longer afford. Every security guard, every driver, and every board member was now a suspect.

At 7:00 AM, Julian walked into Victor’s private study, a room locked and sealed by probate attorneys weeks ago. Following Leo’s clue, Julian scanned the towering mahogany bookshelves until he found Victor’s weathered leather-bound copy of The Count of Monte Cristo.

Inside the hollowed-out spine rested a tiny, antique brass key and an encrypted micro-SD drive.

Julian plugged the drive into an air-gapped terminal. When the encryption cracked, documents flooded the monitor: proprietary schematics for green hydrogen cargo fleets, offshore bank accounts, and covert wire transfers totaling forty million dollars funneled through dummy corporations in the Cayman Islands.

The recipient of those funds was Vance Holdings—Victoria’s family firm. But the authorization signatures bore the distinct, razor-sharp script of Arthur Sterling.

"He sold out his own flesh and blood," Julian murmured, his fists clenching until his knuckles turned white.

Victor had discovered that Uncle Arthur was laundering illicit cartel money through the family’s international shipping lanes. When Victor threatened to go to the Department of Justice, Arthur conspired with Victoria—promising her that if she helped eliminate Victor and marry Julian, she would reign as the undisputed queen of the reformed Sterling Empire.

A soft knock interrupted his grim revelation. It was Clara, dressed in simple civilian clothes provided by the housekeeper.

"Mr. Sterling," Clara said hesitantly. "Two black town cars just pulled past the main security gate. They didn't wait for clearance. The guards let them right through."

Julian glanced at the security monitors. The sleek sedans bore the distinctive crest of the Sterling Board of Directors. Uncle Arthur had arrived to claim what he believed was rightfully his.
