Chapter 2: Ghosts in the Nursery

The heavy oak doors of the Sterling Estate closed behind Julian, Leo, and Clara, shutting out the storm of flashing cameras and shouting paparazzi. The sprawling mansion, once filled with Victor’s hearty laughter and warmth, had felt like a hollow mausoleum since the funeral. Tonight, however, it carried a strange, fragile heartbeat.

Clara, still in her stained catering apron, stood uncomfortably in the grand foyer. She was a twenty-eight-year-old single mother who worked three jobs to support her own ailing mother, yet when she stumbled upon Leo locked inside a pantry in the banquet hall’s service wing, she hadn't hesitated to risk everything to bring him into the light.

"He was terrified, Mr. Sterling," Clara said softly, holding a mug of chamomile tea the butler had provided. "A man in a black jacket threw him into the storage cellar this morning. If I hadn't gone down for extra table linens, he would have been smuggled out during the fireworks."

Julian looked at Clara with deep reverence. In a world where millionaires sold their souls for fractional shares of stock, this woman with barely twenty dollars in her checking account had shown unmatched nobility. "You saved my family, Clara. A thank you will never be enough. From this moment on, you and your family are protected by Sterling resources."

Upstairs in the nursery, Leo sat wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sipping warm milk. The room had remained untouched since Victor’s passing—model airplanes hanging from the ceiling, painted stars on the navy-blue walls.

"Uncle Julian?" Leo asked, his voice shaking. "Daddy told me before he left that if anything happened, I had to find the iron key inside his favorite book. He said... he said the bad people wanted his drawings."

Julian frowned gently, sitting on the edge of the bed. "What drawings, buddy?"

"The blue papers with all the bridges and ships," Leo whispered. "He told me they were worth more than gold, but they could also hurt a lot of people if Uncle Arthur got them."

Julian’s heart stopped. Arthur Sterling—his father’s brother, the venerable patriarch of Sterling Shipping and the elder statesman of the family board. Victoria’s arrest had felt like an ending, but Leo’s innocent confession made Julian realize it was merely the opening move in a deadly corporate war.
