Chapter 9: The Sovereign Stance

David stopped in the doorway, his silhouette blocking the night air. In the dim light, the chemical scarring around his eyelids gave his face a harsh, fractured look.
"Clara," he said, taking a deliberate step forward, attempting to summon the menacing resonance that had once commanded her total obedience. "Look at what you’ve turned our family into. Hiding like criminals in the woods."
Clara didn't step back. Her feet were firmly planted on the timber floor, her back straight, her breathing slow and controlled. She didn't raise her voice; she didn't scream or plead.
"We aren't hiding, David," Clara said, her tone cutting through the quiet room like a blade. "We were healing. But you couldn't accept that your control ended the moment you laid hands on us."
"I made you!" David snapped, taking another aggressive stride, his fist curling at his side. "You had nothing before me, and you'll have nothing after me!"
"I built my life with my own hands long before I met you," Clara replied, striking the flare against its base.
A brilliant, dazzling crimson light hissed to life, illuminating every corner of the room in searing brilliance. David recoiled, raising his arm instinctively to shield his damaged, photosensitive eyes from the intense glare.
Before he could recover his balance, two uniformed security officers and Deputy Vance stepped through the broken doorway behind him, their sidearms drawn and non-lethal tasers trained directly on his chest.
"David Davis, step back and place your hands behind your head immediately!" Vance ordered, her voice echoing with commanding authority.
David looked from the blinding light of the flare to the badges surrounding him, then back to Clara. In her eyes, he found no fear, no submission, and no hatred—only the absolute, unyielding indifference of a woman who had finally stripped him of his power.

He lowered his hands, slowly sinking to his knees on the wooden floor as the handcuffs clicked into place with finality.
