Chapter 5: Unraveling the Shadows

The first few weeks at Harbor House exposed the unseen scars that physical bandages could not mend. While Clara attended trauma-informed therapy sessions with Evelyn, Lily joined the children’s art therapy circle led by Marcus, a soft-spoken counselor who used woodworking and clay modeling to help kids communicate.

Clara sat in the support circle, listening to women from across the country share their accounts of quiet oppression. There was Maya, an accountant whose self-worth had been systematically erased by an abusive partner; and Elena, who had fled across state lines with nothing but her infant in a diaper bag.

"The hardest part isn't leaving," Maya shared one rainy afternoon, her hands wrapped around a mug of chamomile tea. "The hardest part is untangling their voice from your own head. Believing that you are capable of surviving without their permission."

Those words echoed in Clara’s mind every time she looked at job listings in the community room. Before meeting David, she had been a certified drafting technician, designing architectural blueprints for municipal libraries. David had gradually convinced her that her skills were outdated, that she was incompetent, eventually forcing her to resign and manage his home exclusively.

"Trauma rewrites your identity to keep you small," Evelyn told Clara during an afternoon review of her case file. "David spent years convincing you that you were powerless so you wouldn’t realize that you held every key to this family's survival."

Evelyn slid a refurbished laptop across the desk. "A local design firm in Portland does remote drafting work. They partner with our transitional program. Show them who you were before the fear took over."

Clara opened the laptop, her fingers hovering hesitantly over the keyboard. As the drafting software loaded, muscle memory took over. Lines, angles, and structures formed on the screen—precise, balanced, and entirely within her control.
