Chapter 11: Breaking Ground

Three months later, a moving truck backed into the driveway of a small, sunlit craftsman house in a coastal suburb two hours north of Seattle.

The house was modest, built in the 1950s with oak floors, wide bay windows, and a generous backyard surrounded by wild blackberry bushes. Clara had signed the lease using her full-time salary from the architectural firm, along with a modest grant from the transitional housing fund.

Lily ran through the empty rooms, her sneakers squeaking joyfully against the polished wood. "Mommy! My room has a window that looks right at the tree!"

Clara carried a stack of moving boxes into the kitchen, setting them on the butcher-block counter. Unlike their previous home, there were no towering cabinets that cast dark shadows, no heavy deadbolts designed to trap occupants inside. The French doors opened effortlessly onto a sunlit wooden deck.

That afternoon, neighbors began to drop by. Mrs. Higgins, a retired schoolteacher from across the street, brought a basket of freshly baked blueberry muffins and a map of the local elementary school walking routes.

"We saw the moving truck," Mrs. Higgins said, her eyes kind and welcoming. "Lily is going to love the kindergarten class here. Mrs. Gable is wonderful with creative kids."

Clara accepted the basket, feeling a lump rise in her throat. For years, David had convinced her that neighbors were nosy threats, that the world outside their fence was hostile and deceitful.

Standing on her own front porch, talking to a stranger whose only intention was genuine kindness, Clara realized how thoroughly she had been lied to. The world was not a battlefield; it was a community waiting to be met.
