Chapter 15: The New Count

Spring arrived with an explosion of color. The backyard garden bed that had once been bare soil was now a dense tapestry of vibrant yellow daffodils and deep crimson tulips, their petals swaying gently in the morning ocean breeze.
Clara sat on the porch steps with a sketchbook in her lap, sketching the layout for an expansion of the regional women's shelter—a project she had undertaken pro bono for Harbor House.
Lily walked out through the screen door, wearing her school backpack, holding a freshly picked red tulip in her hand. She sat down beside her mother, leaning her head against Clara's shoulder.
"Mommy?" Lily asked, twirling the flower between her fingers.
"Yes, honey?"
"Do you remember the game we used to play? With the fingers?"
Clara’s hand paused on the sketchbook. For a brief second, the memory of that cold kitchen tile, the smell of sulfur, and the desperate countdown flickered across her mind. But the shadow had lost its edge; it was merely history now, powerless against the morning light.
"I remember," Clara said softly.
Lily smiled, reaching over and gently lifting Clara’s hand, opening her fingers one by one.
"One," Lily said, touching Clara’s index finger. "For our house."
"Two," Clara continued, her smile matching her daughter’s as she raised her middle finger. "For our garden."
"Three," Lily finished, touching the third finger and resting her hand over her mother's palm. "For forever."

Clara closed her hand around Lily’s, locking their fingers together in a warm, unbreakable clasp.
There were no more codes, no more alarms, and no more hiding in the dark. The count was complete, and the horizon ahead was wide, open, and entirely free.
