Chapter 6: The Gathering Storm

Far from the sanctuary of the pines, David stood before a county magistrate in a sterile courtroom. His legal counsel, funded by his family’s commercial real estate firm, argued vigorously for reduced bail, citing his clean prior record and community standing.

"My client was the victim of a chemical assault in his own home," his attorney argued smoothly, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "There is no physical evidence that he initiated force on the morning in question. His wife fled with their minor daughter without notification."

The magistrate, reviewing the responding officer’s report and the medical records from St. Jude’s, frowned deeply. Yet the rigid machinery of the legal system had procedural limits.

"Bail is set at fifty thousand dollars," the judge ruled, bringing the gavel down. "A temporary restraining order is issued. The defendant is barred from contacting Clara Davis or approaching within five hundred yards of her designated shelter."

By evening, the bail was posted. David stepped out onto the courthouse steps, wearing a pair of dark sunglasses to shield his chemical-burned eyes from the late afternoon sun.

His brother drove the sedan in silence until they reached the highway. "You need to let them go, Dave. The lawyers will handle the divorce and custody mediation."

David stared out the window, his jaw clenched tight. "She didn't do this alone. Someone helped her plan that keypad alarm. She thinks she can hide behind social workers and state lines."

He pulled out a burner phone, typing a message to a private investigator specializing in skipped bail and asset retrieval. The law had drawn a perimeter, but David’s obsession was built on possession, not legality. The chase had merely shifted into the shadows.
