Chapter 14: Echoes Turned to Armor

On Lily’s seventh birthday, Clara organized a celebration in their backyard. The lawn was filled with colorful paper lanterns, a wooden picnic table covered in homemade cupcakes, and the sound of half a dozen children playing tag among the blackberry bushes.
Evelyn Cross had driven down from the foothills to attend, bringing a handcrafted wooden jewelry box made by the artisans at Harbor House.
As the children lined up for cake, Evelyn stood beside Clara on the wooden deck, watching Lily blow out her candles to a chorus of cheers.
"How is she doing?" Evelyn asked quietly. "Truly?"
"She still has moments," Clara admitted honestly, watching her daughter hand the first slice of cake to a shy classmate. "A sudden loud crash or a slamming door will make her pause for a second. But she doesn't hide anymore. She looks around, assesses reality, and keeps moving."
"And you?" Evelyn asked, turning her perceptive gaze toward Clara.
Clara looked at her own hands. The scars from that kitchen floor five years ago had faded into thin, pale lines along her knuckles—permanent, but no longer painful.
"I don't look back with regret anymore," Clara said. "I look back with respect for the woman who crawled across that floor and gave the signal. She survived so Lily and I could live."

Evelyn smiled, clinking her glass of lemonade against Clara’s. "That isn't just survival, Clara. That is victory."
