Chapter 13: The Bridge Project

A year after the trial, Clara stood at the head of a conference table at the Seattle Municipal Infrastructure Board. Displayed behind her was a comprehensive blueprint for a new community youth center—a facility designed with open skylights, transparent glass corridors, and zero blind spots.

"Safety in architecture isn't about building higher walls," Clara explained to the board of directors, her voice commanding the room with effortless poise. "Safety is about sightlines, accessibility, and natural light. When a space feels open, people feel valued. When people feel valued, community protection becomes organic."

The board approved the design unanimously.

After the presentation, the senior partner of her firm walked beside her toward the elevator lobby. "Clara, five years ago, if someone had told me a junior drafter could redesign our entire municipal safety portfolio, I would have hesitated. What you bring to structural design is rare. You understand how space affects the human spirit."

"I learned that space can either be a cage or a sanctuary," Clara replied, pressing the elevator button. "I prefer to build sanctuaries."

That evening, Clara drove home along the coastal highway as the sunset painted the Pacific Ocean in shades of apricot and lavender. She listened to the radio, the windows rolled halfway down, letting the salty sea breeze fill the car.

She wasn't driving with an eye on the rearview mirror anymore. Her eyes were fixed squarely on the road ahead.
