Chapter 8

Julian didn't answer her immediate question. Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key attached to a leather fob—the exact key his father had given him on his eighteenth birthday with strict instructions never to lose it. Elena’s eyes dropped to the key, recognition and sudden dread flashing across her meticulously contoured features. She had searched every cabinet, every desk drawer, and every floorboard in the entire mansion during her covert visits, but she had never found the corresponding lock.
"You searched the house for months, didn't you?" Julian said, his voice dangerously quiet as he towered over her. "You memorized the blueprints, you bribed the estate staff, you even convinced my own accountant to leak the financial statements. But you missed the one place that mattered."
Elena pressed her back harder against the mirror, her breath catching in her throat as she realized the catastrophic scope of her ignorance.
"There was no other room," Elena insisted, though her voice lacked its previous conviction. "The architectural plans were complete. I verified every square inch."
"My great-great-grandfather built this estate after surviving the industrial collapse," Julian explained, a bitter, proud smile touching his lips. "He didn't trust banks, and he certainly didn't trust paper blueprints filed with the city. The true deed, along with the original incorporation documents and the unalterable family trust, was never part of the digital registry you hacked."
Elena’s eyes widened in absolute horror. "Where is it?" she hissed, lunging forward in a desperate attempt to grab the brass key from his hand, but Julian easily sidestepped her frantic movement, letting her stumble against the edge of the vanity table.

"It’s buried beneath the floorboards of the old wine cellar," Julian said smoothly, stepping toward the door. "A reinforced concrete vault that survived the 1906 earthquake. Do you really think a simple parlor fire could reach three feet of reinforced steel?"
Elena let out a sharp, breathless gasp, her hands gripping the wooden edge of the table as the foundation of her entire criminal enterprise crumbled into dust. She realized then that she hadn't stolen the estate at all; she had merely burned down an empty shell while the true heart of the family legacy remained completely untouchable.
