Chapter 1

The bridal suite smelled faintly of expensive orchids and mounting panic. Elena stood rigidly before the ornate, full-length mirror, her pristine white wedding gown shimmering under the warm sconces. Her dark hair was sculpted into an intricate updo, though a few stray strands clung to her damp neck. In the center of the room stood six-year-old Lily, her blonde curls framing a face contorted in raw grief. The small white flower girl dress she wore felt heavy and wrong. Lily clutched her woven wicker basket tightly against her chest, tears spilling freely down her flushed cheeks, her quiet sobbing cutting through the tense silence of the room.
Elena whirled around, her face twisting into an ugly mask of fury. She took a sharp step forward, her voice a harsh, venomous hiss that echoed off the mahogany walls.
"Stop crying!" Elena yelled, her eyes flashing with uncontrolled rage. "Shut your mouth right now, you little brat! Do you want to ruin everything I have worked for?"
Before Lily could shrink back further, the heavy mahogany door swung open with a sharp click. Julian rushed into the room, his black tuxedo immaculate, his black bow tie slightly askew from the frantic pace of his entrance. His face was etched with deep urgency and protective instinct as he strode directly toward his daughter.
Lily sobbed louder at the sight of him, holding her arms out desperately.
"Daddy!" Lily cried tearfully, her small frame shaking with genuine terror.
Julian dropped to his knees in an instant, pulling the trembling girl into a fierce, protective embrace. He buried his face in her blonde curls, rubbing her back soothingly while glaring up at Elena with an expression of cold, unbridled disgust. Elena towered over them, her jaw clenched, her hands balled into tight fists at her sides as she stared down at the touching scene with unconcealed malice.
Lily buried her face against Julian’s shoulder, her voice muffled but carrying clearly across the silent suite.
"Please don't marry her," Lily begged, her small hands clutching the fabric of his jacket.

Elena took a menacing half-step forward, ready to strike, but stopped as Lily suddenly reached into the pocket of her small flower girl dress. With trembling fingers, the little girl pulled out a sleek black smartphone. She thrust the illuminated screen upward, holding it directly in front of Elena’s face. Elena froze, the color draining completely from her carefully contoured cheeks as she stared down at the display, her eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing shock.
"Daddy, I found this," Lily whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling, prophetic register that made Julian’s blood run cold.
