Chapter 7

Before Julian could process the terrifying implication of her words, his smartphone buzzed incessantly in his breast pocket. He released his grip on Elena, stumbling backward as if physically struck by the rapid succession of emergency alerts flashing across his screen. With trembling fingers, he pulled the device out and tapped the notification icon. The live security feed from his estate had transformed into a nightmare of smoke and amber flames. Thick, dark plumes of black smoke billowed out of the historic library windows, swallowing the centuries-old oak bookshelves and the priceless oil paintings that lined the grand hallway.
Julian stared at the tiny screen, paralyzed by the horrific realization that his family’s physical history was vanishing into ash right before his eyes. The remote camera flickered once, twice, and then went entirely black as the internal power grid melted under the ferocious heat.
Elena watched him from across the room, her expression turning from arrogant defiance to cold, calculating satisfaction. She smoothed the front of her pristine white lace dress, adjusting her veil with agonizing calmness as if she were simply preparing for a routine evening out rather than standing amidst the ruins of a destroyed life.
"A shame, really," Elena remarked casually, her voice devoid of any human empathy. "Such beautiful architecture. But old things have to burn so new empires can be built upon their ashes. And my empire is just beginning."
Julian’s chest heaved with ragged breaths. The grief threatening to consume him suddenly crystallized into a cold, unbreakable resolve. He looked up from the ruined screen, his eyes locking onto Elena with a terrifying calmness that made the color drain entirely from her face.
"You think destroying the house breaks me?" Julian whispered, taking a slow step toward her. "You think bricks and mortar were the only things my father left behind?"

Elena’s confident smirk falter, her eyes darting nervously toward the open doorway as Julian continued his steady advance, his expression completely unreadable.
"What are you talking about?" she asked, her voice dropping an octave, losing its sharp edge as a sudden chill settled deep into her bones.
