Chapter 13

The betrayal cut deeper than any physical wound Julian had ever suffered. Marcus. The man who had held Lily’s hand in the parking lot, the man he had trusted with his life and his daughter’s safety, was the architect of the entire conspiracy. He had orchestrated the fake kidnapping, the stolen key, and the coordinated assault to ensure Elena’s victory was absolute. Julian gripped the metal security badge tightly in his palm until the sharp edges dug into his flesh, drawing a single bead of bright red blood.

"Julian?" Sarah asked hesitantly, stepping back as she saw the dark, menacing expression settling over his face. "What did you find?"

"Marcus," Julian replied, his voice flat, devoid of all human emotion. "He was never my friend. He was Elena’s partner from the very beginning."

Before Sarah could process the devastating revelation, Julian’s damaged phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He pulled the cracked device out and swiped the screen. A new video message had just been received from an unknown, encrypted sender. He pressed play.

The video opened on the dimly lit interior of the old harbor warehouse. Bound tightly to a wooden chair in the center of the concrete room was Lily, a strip of grey tape pressed firmly across her mouth to silence her cries. Standing directly behind her, casually tossing the brass key up and down in his palm with a smug grin, was Marcus. Beside him stood Elena, having apparently arrived from the country club via helicopter, her white wedding gown stained with soot and dirt at the hem.

"Impressive, isn't it, Julian?" Marcus’s voice echoed through the video recording as he leaned down to whisper something into Lily’s ear, making the little girl flinch away in terror. "You always were too proud to notice who was actually running your father’s accounts behind the scenes. Bring yourself and the backup drive to the old harbor warehouse alone in twenty minutes, or we start dismantling your precious family legacy piece by piece—starting with your daughter."

The video ended abruptly, plunging the screen back into darkness. Sarah burst into tears, covering her face with her hands as the hopelessness of the situation closed in around them.

Julian didn't hesitate for another second. He climbed back into the ruined car, his jaw clenched so tightly his teeth ached. He didn't need the police, and he didn't need a legal team. He was going to finish this himself.
