Chapter 14

The old harbor warehouse loomed out of the thick ocean fog like a rotting skeletal beast against the midnight sky. Rusted corrugated iron walls rattled loudly in the cold wind, while distant waves crashed violently against the rotting wooden pilings beneath the structure. Julian parked Marcus’s damaged car three hundred yards away in the dense shadows of a rusted shipping container, cutting the headlights and the engine completely. He slipped out into the freezing night air, moving with the silent, deliberate precision of a predator stalking its prey.

He didn't bring a weapon, but he brought something far more dangerous: absolute, unyielding fury and the encrypted backup drive containing every single financial transaction Marcus and Elena had made over the past three years.

Julian crept toward the side entrance of the warehouse, his boots making no sound against the wet concrete floor. He pushed open a rusted side door just enough to slip inside the cavernous, dimly lit interior. The smell of salt water, damp concrete, and burning diesel filled the air.

In the center of the vast, open floor sat Lily, still tied to the wooden chair, her blue eyes wide with terror as she spotted Julian stepping out of the shadows. Standing a few feet away were Marcus and Elena, the brass key inserted into a heavy floor safe built into the concrete foundation.

"I knew you'd come, Julian," Marcus laughed, turning around with a smug expression, holding a heavy iron crowbar loosely in his right hand. "You were always predictably sentimental."

Elena stepped forward, her white wedding gown looking ghostly and ruined in the dim industrial lighting. Her face was twisted into a triumphant sneer as she watched Julian approach.

"Give us the backup drive, Julian," Elena demanded, holding her hand out impatiently. "And sign the final asset forfeiture release. Then, maybe, we’ll let the brat go home with you."

Julian stopped ten feet away from them, keeping his hands visible at his sides. He looked past them at Lily, giving her a subtle, reassuring nod that made the little girl’s shoulders relax just a fraction.

"You really thought you won, didn't you, Marcus?" Julian said, his voice echoing loudly off the metal walls, carrying a chilling calmness that made Marcus’s triumphant smirk falter for a split second.

"We hold all the cards, Julian," Marcus snapped, stepping closer with the crowbar raised. "Hand over the drive right now, or I swear I'll break her arm."
