Chapter 12

The SUVs roared to life, their heavy tires kicking up gravel and dust as they sped away into the dark coastal fog, taking Lily and the brass key with them. Julian broke free from the remaining captor with a sudden surge of adrenaline, shoving the man hard into the roadside brush, but it was already too late. The vehicles vanished around the distant cliffside curve in a matter of seconds. He stood panting in the middle of the empty highway, his hands bleeding from the shattered glass, his mind racing through the desperate fragments of a plan falling rapidly apart.

Sarah stumbled out of the passenger side of the damaged car, coughing from the dust and clutching her bruised arm.

"Julian... we have to call the police right now," Sarah urged, her voice trembling uncontrollably as she pointed toward her own phone. "There’s no other way."

"The police are compromised, Sarah," Julian said coldly, wiping a streak of blood from his forehead with the back of his hand. "Elena didn't just buy lawyers; she bought local jurisdiction months ago. Every patrol unit within twenty miles reports directly to her uncle."

Sarah stared at him in horrified disbelief, the sheer scale of the conspiracy finally sinking in. "Then what do we do? They have Lily, they have the key to the vault, and your house is burned to the ground."

Julian paused, closing his eyes for a fraction of a second as he tried to quiet the panic threatening to overwhelm his reasoning. Then, a sudden, sharp memory cut through the darkness. When the scarred man had frisked his jacket, he hadn't just taken the brass key. He had left behind a small, discarded item that had fallen out of his own tactical vest during the scuffle. Julian dropped to his knees on the damp asphalt, sweeping his hands frantically through the gravel beneath the spot where the kidnapper had stood. His fingers brushed against a small, metallic object. He pulled it up into the light.

It was a standard-issue security badge belonging to Marcus’s private security firm—the exact firm Julian had hired years ago to safeguard the estate. Marcus. The horrifying realization hit Julian like a physical lightning bolt. The betrayal wasn't just coming from Elena; his oldest, most trusted childhood friend was the mastermind behind the entire operation.

Julian stood up slowly, his expression turning terrifyingly cold as the final puzzle pieces locked into place.
